A landslide occurring in mid-October on Strickeen, caused significant damage to two sections of one of the most accessible trails in the Reeks, which accommodates more than 17,000 walkers annually.
Given the importance of this route, South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) prioritised restoring access as quickly as possible.
In January, SKDP applied to the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) under the Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme and successfully secured funding to undertake the necessary repair works. Following the approval, SKDP initiated a formal tender process, and the following works were completed to reinstate the Trail.
A geotechnical survey was conducted to assess the damage caused by the landslip and to determine what methods and measures could be used to restore the trail and prevent future occurrences.
Trail Repair works were completed as recommended in the Geotechnical survey, including the construction of 4 cross-drains to prevent further erosion, rebuilding stone banks, reconstructing new steps and turfing all works when completed.
